Resources Summer Poems
Resource Preview The children can compose and perform a range of poems to celebrate summer themes and ideas. The class can spend time selecting vocabulary to use in their poems to create descriptive phrases about people, places and feelings connected to the summer such as spending time on a family holiday and the sights and sounds of a seashore. The children can use poems by significant authors to discuss how to compose and edit their own poetry.

Show the children how to structure and format a range of poems to reflect the summer such as writing a Haiku to describe a summer outing or a Kenning to describe a summer ice cream. The class can explore how to use figurative language in similes and metaphors to express ideas about the summer season.

Teaching activities to get the children to choose words to describe shells that can be found on a beach that could be used in a poem about a summer visit to the seaside.
