Resources Summer Maths
Resource Preview One of the most effective ways of helping the children refine and develop calculation skills in maths is by getting the children to investigate context related problems so that they can associate number skills with aspects of their everyday lives. The children can explore how to use concrete equipment and pictorial diagrams when solving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems using mental calculations. The class can explain how to use some of the mental number skills when solving a written calculation by breaking the problem into a series of smaller steps.

During any maths lesson, you can build in time for the children to explain their calculation methods to the whole class, a small group or a working partner. This will help to ensure that the children have understand why they are performing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations in specific ways. Encourage the class to use the correct vocabulary when explaining how to solve a number problem. They could also design multimedia presentations showing how to complete a number calculation.
