Resources Letter Writing
Resource Preview Teaching the children how to structure and format letters can provide them with a skill that they can utilise in their future lives for a number of real world situations. The class can practise writing pen letters to children in other schools around the world to find out about their lives as part of a geography topic on places and cultures. The children can write real letters to their favourite authors, pop stars and sports men and women to request their support in a range of school activities such as asking them open a school fair or provide some items for a school charity auction.

Working in different curriculum areas, the children can practise writing letters to achieve a number of objectives and outcomes. For example, as part of a geography topic the children could write letters to the local council outlining reasons for a new pedestrian crossing close to the school or the children could contact a local religious centre to invite them into the school for a presentation. The class could role-play as different characters in a story by writing letters to match some of the plot events and situations.
