Resources Division Calculations
Resource Preview Formal written division calculations can be tricky for the children to master. You can progress the children through a number of stages to help them divide numbers confidently using informal mental and formal written methods. Help the class understand the process involved in dividing numbers by getting them to use concrete equipment to physically share numbers of objects into groups to solve a real world problem. You can use the concrete equipment to illustrate how division problems can be solved using repeated subtraction.

Progress the children on from concrete equipment by allowing them to use diagrams to explain how to solve a division number problem linking the completed arrays to a formal written number sentence with the correct symbols. You can then refer back to how the children used grouping and repeated subtraction when teaching them the formal written methods of division. Throughout the process the children should be taught how to deal with the remainders to match the problem so that they know when to express the quotient as a fraction or decimal or when it should be rounded.
