Resources Class Baking
Resource Preview The class can develop their literacy and numeracy skills by planning and baking cup cakes to match a classroom topic. Working in English, the children can write and follow instructions about how to make cup cakes filled with dried fruit and decorated in marzipan shapes. They can practise writing lists of ingredients and equipment needed when baking the cakes.

The class can refine their measurement skills by practising how to record accurate measurements of ingredients needed for the cup cakes. The children can cut and describe shapes from marzipan to decorate the top of the cakes.

Cup Cakes
Get the children to follow a simple recipe to make some plain cup cakes. You can purchase some cup cake mix from a supermarket which the children can use as the basis for their cakes. The cup cakes can be customised by adding dried fruit to the cake mixture before being baked in the oven. When the baked cakes have cooled the children can then cut and shape marzipan to decorate the top of the cakes to match a classroom topic such as shapes of animals that live in a woodland or pictures of symbols to represent Roman gods and goddesses.

Cake Instructions
Working in English, the children can write sets of instructions about how to make cup cakes. Show the class some example recipes for other cakes. Get the children to identify how instructions should be formatted and structured by using sequenced steps, imperative verbs and simple language and vocabulary. Tell the class to write some poor instructions for another child in the class to correct and improve. The children can also suggest how to add diagrams to show the steps needed in making the cup cakes.

Cake Lists
The class can also develop their literacy punctuation skills by writing lists of ingredients and equipment needed to make the cup cakes. The children can learn how to use commas to separate items in a list. Get the class to write lists for the cup cakes without any punctuation for another child to correctly punctuate by adding capital letters, full stops and commas. Some children can be extended by getting them to write lists using colons to introduce a list of independent clauses about the cup cakes.

Ingredient Measurements
Working in Maths, the children can develop their measurement skills in selecting the correct ingredients to match the cup cakes. Teach the class how to read the divisions on a scale in grams or kilograms correctly when measuring out the ingredients needed for the cup cakes. The children can explain how to convert their measurements between different units such as changing mass in kilograms into grams and vice versa.

Shape Decorations
The class can use marzipan to create some shapes to decorate the tops of their cup cakes. Get the children to practise arranging geometric shapes to form different pictures to match a classroom topic. Ask the class to identify and describe the properties of the shapes used in their designs. Once the children have selected their design, the shapes can be cut from different coloured marzipan which can then be layered on top of the cup cakes.
