Resource Preview The new school year can be a worrying time for both teachers and pupils as they are introduced back into school life after the long summer break. There are a number of strategies and techniques that you can employ to help the children settle into their new classroom and adopt some of the rules and methods of classroom organisation that they will need to follow in the forthcoming school year.

It is important not to rush the initial activities so that you can explain clearly your expectations of the children's work and behaviour. Try not to over plan the first day so that you have plenty of opportunity to assess the children's understanding and attitude towards school life. Allow plenty of time for discussion so that the children can feel ownership of their new classroom and how it will be managed and organised over the forthcoming school year. Use a range of classroom activities to help the children get back into the swing of school life before launching straight into a new topic. Make sure that throughout the initial activities that you are reinforcing your expectations of the how the children should work and behave in the classroom.
